Frequently Asked Questions

Q: There are several dynamic equalizer plugins on the market. What is unique about DynPEQ?

A: There are several ways in which we believe both Trio and Quartet are unique tools for audio fine tuning. Not all the points below apply in comparison to all other commercial dynamic equalizer plugins, but we believe at least one of the following points will apply to any similar product.

• DynPEQ is built upon the base of a parametric equalizer, with parametric stages in series. Many dynamic equalizers are variants of a graphic equalizer, with band stages in parallel.

• The parametric root of DynPEQ allows the user to tune a band wherever one wishes. Variants of graphic equalizers fix the band edges so that they cannot overlap.

• DynPEQ is designed to minimize the artifacts of its digital processing, so that the source timbre does not sound modified. Many dynamic equalizers emphasize their non-linearity for controlled distortion characteristics.

• DynPEQ is based on a cascade of low-order elementary signal processing operations. Many dynamic equalizers claim of high band cutoff rates--without mentioning the phase effects that may occur at these steep crossover points.

In short, DynPEQ allows the user to go beyond the typical use of a parametric EQ, to not only compensate for things like spectral dead (or live) spots but also the dynamics therein. It can be considered a logical extension of a parametric EQ, permitting a logical extension of critical listening. The application of many dynamic equalizers is geared towards maximizing the broadcast spectrum for regulation compliance, loudness, and non-linear effects.

Q: The parameter windows for plugins are usually not detached from the workstation. Why is DynPEQ's parameter window detached?

A: Because of the large number of parameters and interactive elements in DynPEQ relative to other plugins. However, the long-term goal is to integrate the parameter window within the graphics frameworks of all workstations. Our intentions have been made known to the workstation developers, and we have no reason to believe progress will not be made. However, we cannot confidently determine a timetable for the UI integration to happen.

We are most proud to announce the imminent availbility of DynPEQ plugins for Pro Tools 10|HDX AAX. For this and a growing number of workstations, the DynPEQ parameter UI is natively integrated without the need for an auxiliary window.

To those who find the current parameter window an inconvenience, we ask for your patience. To those who appreciate the separate persistent parameter window, we suggest you request to your workstation manufacturer that plugin windows be provided with a "tear-off" option.
